The Lair of the Alchemist – David Hackbridge Johnson – Eynsford Concert Band
The world premiere of a new piece by David Hackbridge Johnson – performed live during our concert ‘Feel the Heat’ at the Pamoja Hall Sevenoaks, on the 27th April 2025.
A note from the composer: “The title of Lair of the Alchemist arose from a competition held by the members of Eynsford Concert Band to choose a title for the piece they commissioned from me for their 50th anniversary year. The most votes went to the title Eynsford Invictus but a not too distant second was a title suggested by the band’s Music Director Mike Smith, Lair of the Alchemist. This immediately set off my inner ear with sounds coming slantwise out of Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. I was happy to write a piece that showcased the band in a challenging but accessible way and I was delighted when they chose to give the work its premiere.”
